eLemonators Used Car Inspections Blog
Tips from the Auto Inspector General.
Portland’s highest ranking vehicle inspector.

I have been doing automobile used car pre-purchase inspections since 1991. I have pretty much seen it all. I have interesting stories to tell and plenty of sound advice to give you during your search for a safe, reliable used car. If you go to the Why use us” page of this website, you will see that my experience and qualifications make this blog the best place to ask questions about the used vehicle you want to buy. This can be done on the phone but it might be fun to share your questions with other car shoppers by submitting your question or story on this blog.

I would like to start out with a short story about something that has been happening in the used car market across the country for the last few years. You may have noticed that used car prices are much higher than what the book values reflect. The reason for this is partly greed but more so, supply and demand. The economy has caused people to conserve their financial resources in many ways. One of the ways they have done this is to avoid buying things they don’t need. New cars seemed to have toped the list so they just kept driving the one they had. With new car sales down, so were trade in’s. No trade in’s, fewer used cars for sale. Fewer used cars at auction caused prices to skyrocket for dealerships wanting to keep cars on the lot. The problem is that the affordable ones all have problems. These are the cars found on many lots these days and at inflated prices.

With people starting to buy new cars again, the prices should start to return to normal soon. For the time being, you need to be very careful about buying cars that seem to be priced according to book value. We have found that even totaled / reconstructed cars are up for sale near book value “good’ condition where they should be offered at below trade in value.

Post a comment or give us a call if you have questions about this. We want to make sure you don’t end up with a car that would be better used as a boat anchor than a mode of transportation.
